Reform Commission's Work No Substitute for New Funding 7.8.10
Reform Commission’s Work Important, but No Substitute for New Sustained Funding

At today’s Town Hall Meeting of the Governor’s Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring, the Alliance acknowledged the importance of the Commission’s work and commended Commission members for their participation.

At the same time, the Alliance observed –

“Whether you decide Virginia’s transportation program should consist of rows of 10 or 8 or 6 deck chairs, make no mistake, like the Titanic, the Commonwealth’s transportation program is sinking and the Commonwealth will sink unless new, reliable funding is provided to build and maintain the transportation network necessary to support the economy, jobs and quality of life Virginians need.”

During its testimony the Alliance said the “single greatest (transportation reform) need is the identification and prioritization (and ultimately finance and construction) of those transportation investments offering the greatest mobility and congestion-reduction benefits to the greatest number of people.”

The Alliance pointed out that neither the Commonwealth nor Northern Virginia has a well-defined list of transportation priorities.
The Alliance also endorsed the idea of merging the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and Northern Virginia Transportation Commission and suggested that the new entity be governed by a Board consisting of more regionally-appointed as opposed to locally-elected individuals.
