Arlington Politican Promotes 1984 Thinking 6/11/10
I-95/I-395 HOT Lanes (cont.)

Arlington Politician Promotes “1984” Thinking

"The result (of building HOT Lanes) will be
more cars on everybody's streets, slower moving traffic and more air pollution."

– Arlington Board Member Chris Zimmerman
Examiner Newspapers, June 7, 2010

So let’s see, as currently designed, the I-95/I-395 HOT Lane project will:
  • Add a new lane to increase capacity of the existing HOV system.
  • Make it easier and provide seamless travel for transit riders and carpoolers to get to Tysons Corner, the Pentagon, District and other major activity centers.
  • Build additional park and ride lots to encourage transit use and carpooling.
  • Provide tens of millions of dollars in new revenue to support public transit.
  • Remove thousands of toll-paying single occupant vehicles from existing conventional lanes, thus improving travel conditions for others.

And this is “bad?”

In fact, it is NOT building the HOT lanes project that will result in even greater I-95/I-395 congestion, more cars on Arlington neighborhood streets, slower moving traffic and more air pollution.

Mr. Zimmerman’s “logic” is reminiscent of the Party’s three slogans in George Orwell’s 1984 – “WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH."

To that we can now add – “Promoting Transit and Carpooling Means More Traffic and Air Pollution.”

It Doesn’t Make Sense.
But Hey, it’s the Arlington Way.
