‘Burbs Continue To Boom
The latest U.S. Census Counts re-affirm that most population growth continues to occur well beyond the Capital Beltway.
Revitalization of the District of Columbia is critical to the region’s overall well-being. And the fact that since 2000 the District has added nearly 28,000 residents for a total of 599,000 or 4.9% increase is encouraging.
Yet, current District levels are still short of its 1990 (606,000) and 1980 (638,000) counts.
Inner jurisdictions such as Arlington (+28,000) and Alexandria (+20,500) also added residents.
However, the really big increases continue to occur well outside the Capital Beltway.
During the past decade, Loudoun (+127,000) and Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park (+98,000) individually added more people than the District, Arlington and Alexandria combined (+77,000).
In addition to Loudoun and Prince William, other Northern Virginia and Maryland jurisdictions that individually added more population than the District, Arlington and Alexandria include;
Frederick MD (+31,478)
Stafford (+30,639)
Spotsylvania (+29,473)
